Since its establishment in 1993, The Solar Car Challenge has impacted thousands of students lives by providing them with hands on experience with science and engineering. The Challenge increases awareness of alternative energy, and teaches high school students world wide how to build roadworthy solar powered cars. The Solar Car Challenge is an annual event that alternates between a track race at Texas Motor Speedway, and a cross-country race that allows students to display their solar powered cars for millions of people to see. The 2016 Solar Car Challenge is a cross-country event from Texas Motor Speedway to Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In July of 2016, The Plano ISD Academy High School will be the first school from the Plano Independent School District to compete in the Solar Car Challenge. The Titan Solar Car Team decided to participate in the Electric Vehicle Division in 2016
